MEET KENT - THE MAN BEHIND THE BADGE
A JOURNEY TO LAW ENFORCEMENT
Billings, it’s more than just a place: it’s home. The O’Donnell family, my family laid roots here in 1882. Agriculture gave them their start but enriching the community was their passion. Farming skills skipped my generation, but I do share their dedication to community by helping to protect it. My hardworking parents instilled in me the importance of perseverance and supported my path to law enforcement. Obtaining a degree in Sociology/Political Science from Montana State University was integral for my development and the only time I ventured away from my hometown.
A PROUD CAREER IN SERVICE
My professional journey spans over 28 years with the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office. I began my career as a transport officer, where I learned the ropes. My dedication and hard work led to promotions—first to Sergeant, then Lieutenant, and Patrol Captain, culminating in my recent promotion to Administrative Captain., where I oversee the daily operations of our department.
Mentorship has played a crucial role in my development. I have been fortunate to learn from some of Montana’s finest law enforcement leaders. This invaluable experience paved the way for my selection to attend the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Commanders. That specialized training. opened doors to extraordinary duties. I serve as the Commander of the SWAT team, a liaison to the Secret Service and CAT teams, Coordinator for the department’s Search and Rescue and River Rescue Crews and took on critical roles like Incident Commander for Disaster and Emergency Services.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Public service runs deep in my veins. It’s not just a job; it’s a calling. I aspire to lead the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office and I am driven by “Your Safety is My Mission.” Together we can ensure a safe and thriving community for all.
