KENT'S TOP PRIORITIES
The campaign for sheriff is dedicated to serving the community with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to public safety. With a deep-rooted passion for public service, Kent's goal is to address critical issues, create a safer environment, and build a safer community for all. Drawing from years of experience, Kent is focused on implementing effective strategies to tackle crime, improve law enforcement, and enhance the overall well-being of our neighborhoods. Here are Kent's top three key issues.
KEY ISSUES
1. Countywide Active Shooter Policy
In light of the increasing need for preparedness in our communities, I advocate for a formal written active shooter policy for Yellowstone County that includes collaboration with local emergency services and fire. This comprehensive policy will provide clear guidelines and protocols for law enforcement, emergency responders, and fire personnel to follow in the event of an active shooter situation, ensuring a coordinated and efficient response. By bringing together these vital agencies, we can enhance communication, streamline operations, and ultimately save lives. Together, we can create a safer environment for our residents, instilling confidence that our department is prepared to respond effectively to any threat or situation which may arise, thereby prioritizing the safety and security of all citizens in Yellowstone County.
2. Reserve Deputy Program
A key focus for public safety and community engagement in Yellowstone County is to significantly increase the size of the deputy reserve program. By expanding this vital program, we can tap into the diverse talents and skills of community members who are eager to serve and give back to their community. A larger reserve deputy program will not only bolster our law enforcement capabilities but foster stronger connections between officers and the community they serve. With more trained reserves, we can ensure increased visibility in neighborhoods, assistance for management/evacuation for disasters and a greater presence at community events. Yellowstone County can empower our citizens to take an active role in public safety through a robust and expanded deputy reserve program.
3. Officer Resilience and Mental Health
In supporting the dedicated deputies of Yellowstone County, I recognize the critical importance of mental health and well-being in their demanding roles. Law enforcement officers face an average of 2 to 5 traumatic incidents each month, a stark contrast to the 1 to 4 incidents experienced by the average citizen over a lifetime. This relentless exposure can lead to significant burnout and emotional strain, jeopardizing not only their health but also their effectiveness in serving our community. To combat this, I propose comprehensive mental health initiatives focused on building resiliency and providing ongoing support. We can create an environment where deputies feel valued and equipped to handle the challenges of their profession. Prioritizing mental health is not just an investment in our deputies' well-being; it is essential for ensuring they remain committed, effective, and fulfilled in their vital roles for years to come.
